Richmond, VA (November 9, 2023) — The Global Education Office will hold a reception and information session for the new L & L Friendship Fund on Wednesday, November 15, from noon - 1:30 p.m. in the Student Commons, Richmond Salons II & III. The reception coincides with International Education Week occurring Nov. 13-17, and will inform attendees about the $2.5 million anonymous gift recently given to the university to fund study abroad participation for students with demonstrated financial need. The event is intended to inform students, faculty and staff about the new opportunities for study abroad and innovative programs that can be developed by faculty.
"This is the single biggest gift for global learning at VCU, and we want to celebrate the opportunities that this generous donor has given to students,” said Jill Blondin, Ph.D., associate vice provost for global initiatives. “Further, there is great significance in holding this reception during International Education Week, which celebrates the benefits of international education and which the L&L Friendship Fund exemplifies," she said.
The event will include a reception with light refreshments to welcome attendees as they hear from students who have studied abroad after earning support from other scholarship sources, and will speak about the impact of their global learning experiences. Following, the Global Learning staff will provide an opportunity for students, faculty, and staff to learn more about the L & L scholarship and how students can study abroad affordably through scholarships and more.
Stephanie Tignor, director of Global Learning, anticipates the event will apprise students of the exciting study abroad opportunities of which they may not be aware.
"The L & L Friendship fund presents an incredible opportunity to our students, especially those who might not have thought that they could afford to study abroad,” she said. “The reception will feature students who have studied abroad who will speak about the impact of international education, and we will honor the inaugural cohort of L & L scholarship recipients.”
The event is open to all students, staff and faculty and registration is required to attend.
